Draft Plans for Demolition

These sketches were also drawn during the user group meetings from Jaunuary 6 - 8, 2008. They give a good representation of the mix of new and old buildings that will be in place after the first phase of construction is complete. These are draft documents and are certain to change over the next few months. Two possible scenarios are shown for the Ohio School for the Deaf.

Project Schedule

This document contains the most recent project schedule available. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the new schools are slated to be ready for the 2010-2011 school year. That would mean we have only 2 more full school years left in the current buildings and dorms.

Educational Specifications

Working with a large team of people over the past 6 months, we developed this document to outline what is needed to make this project succesful. None of us are operating under the assumption that the final schools will include everything that is stated in this book in the first phase of construction, but it is our best attempt so far at starting to get real and meaningful information down on paper, and it will serve as a guide over the next 5 to 10 years as we move forward.

Blindness 101 and Deafness 101

On May 10th and 11th, the Superintendents of the two schools each presided over a 4 hour long training for the architects, construction managers, and officials from the Ohio School Facilities Commission and the Office of Budget and Management. The handouts and presentations from the trainings are available here.

Blindness 101 - In addition to the written topics here, the participants spent several hours with blindfolds and low vision simulators walking around the local neighborhoods, including both High Street and Morse Road.

Deafness 101 - The participants were also exposed to recordings representing the difference between a mild, moderate, or extreme high-frequency hearing loss. A discussion of deaf culture and community was also a part of the class.

The History of OSSB Construction

This presentation was given by Dr Mazzoli, OSSB Superintendent, to a number of public groups in the spring of 2007 to help them understand what construciton has taken place in the blind school's history and what needs to be done today.

A Perspective from The NFB

This article, by Eric Duffy, appeared in the National Federation of the Blind's Buckeye Bulletin. It presents a veiwpoint from someone to whom this project holds both great potential and great trepidation. Thanks to Eric for providing a screen-reader freindly text version of this article.
